If you do what I did and bring old hiking boots, they will likely fall apart early in the trek, making it much more difficult and scary. Having said that, my guide Richard located super glue near Salkantay pass, let me use his walking sticks, and encouraged me to walk at my own pace, which was helpful.
Aside from that, the Salkantay trek itself is amazing and offers wonderful views. Some days are more challenging than others, but it is a worthwhile and mind-changing journey, especially if you have not trekked beyond your backyard before.

AUSANGATE TREK was amazing. We were already impressed with what was included in the trek prior to arrival, but the staff really went above and beyond to make it an incredible trip. Jimmy John was our guide (THE BEST) and couldn't have been more fun. Cook and support staff were fantastic, too. Definitely contact the office ahead of time if you have any diet restrictions, want extra stuff or less stuff.
excellent equipment, huge quantities of food that was all delicious and varied, well staffed with enough donkeys to carry and people to set pace to. Our guide himself was funny, spoke strong english for the non-spanish speakers in group and knew tonnes of history and general cultural information of area. All the staff in our group were locals of surrounding area and really enjoyed chatting with you once you made the effort to chat in Spanish.

We did the 4 day, 3 night Salkantay trek at the end of Jan and had an amazing time. We were very lucky with the weather, which obviously has nothing to do with the company, but even if it had been pouring rain it would have been an amazing experience thanks to our guides and sttaf. Juri and France (guides) were really helpful, informative, and fun! The trek itself wasn't as difficult as I've read about, but everyone takes it differently depending on your fitness level and how you react to the altitude. Either way, the team at "AUSANGATE TREK" let you go at your own pace and don't make you feel bad if you're a bit slower.

I registered here on TripAdvisor only to be able to give my very best recommendations to the great people that run AUSANGATE TREK. It was a true pleasure to deal with this agency all the way from booking, welcome when arriving, hotel in Cusco, trip to Machu Picchu, tour to Machu Picchu (thanks Ruben for great passionate story telling!) and dinner in Aguas Calientes. We went there two families of in total 8 and we really appreciated the great service that AUSANGATE TREK gave us. Thanks! .
